Children’s Technology Workshop Announces New Calgary Regional Director

CALGARY, ALBERTA (Saturday, June 11, 2005) - Jacquie Ellis will be the Regional Director for Children’s Technology Workshop, the first franchise in Calgary. This new franchise will offer the same innovative engineering and technology programs to pre-school and elementary school children that have been offered across Canada, the United States and in Hong Kong since 1999.

“We’re thrilled to find a person with Jacquie’s talent and drive to deliver our programs in Calgary”, says Darryl Reiter, President of Children’s Technology Workshop.

Ellis graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.Sc. in Industrial Engineering in 1998, interned with Nortel and worked recently in the Oil & Gas sector. “I’ve always been very proud to be a female engineer”, says Ellis. “Starting in Jr. High, girls are encouraged to consider engineering as a profession. When I go into elementary schools and talk to girls about engineering and technology there’s an incredible amount of excitement. But it takes a lot for girls to follow that passion”.

Since the 1960’s there’s been phenomenal growth in the number of women in university and college programs in Canada. Yet undergraduate enrolment in engineering and applied sciences, mathematics and physical science has stayed surprisingly static over the past 20 years. “Why not start introducing engineering to girls in junior kindergarten?” says Ellis.

Ellis will have her chance in the fall, with the Children’s Technology Workshop Early Literacy Program for junior kindergarten to grade 2 children. This new program combines storytelling/re-telling activities, hands-on science-based activities related to the stories and skill-building activities in letter recognition and phonics.

Children’s Technology Workshop programs for children from junior kindergarten to Grade 8 run year round with day camps, after-school workshops, in-class seminars and parties. Summer day camps start July 18th and run to September 2nd out of the McKenzie Towne Hall, Calgary. For more information visit www.ctworkshop.com.
