After 90 Years – The Duke Sandwich Company Announces Franchising Plans

GREENVILLE, S.C (Tuesday, February 08, 2005) - After nearly 90 years in the food service industry, Greenville, S.C.-based Duke Sandwich Company has announced plans to franchise. New franchisees will be joining the nearly 16 billion dollar a year sandwich industry.
“We’ve always thought Duke Sandwiches would appeal to people outside of the Greenville market,” said Andrew Smart, president of Duke Sandwich Company. “With the unprecedented growth in both the sandwich industry and franchise investments, we felt as though now was the right time to take this strategic next step.”
Smart and his family began the franchising process with the assistance of the legal firm, Leatherwood, Walker, Todd and Mann. At the firm’s recommendation, Smart created a new division, Duke Sandwich Franchising, Inc. to manage franchising inquiries and provide support services to new stores. The company also updated its Web site, dukesandwich.com, to include franchising information. The franchising division will begin by offering franchise opportunities in four Southeast states: South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.
Each new franchise location will be built to specific guidelines, and feature Duke Sandwich original recipes and signature spreads such as chicken salad, minced barbeque and pimento cheese; along with a variety of soups, salads and desserts.
“As a 90-year-old company we can honestly say that Duke Sandwich is a proven business with timeless appeal that should be extremely attractive to potential franchisees,” said Smart.
The Greenville, S.C.-based Duke Sandwich Company was founded in 1917 by Eugenia Duke. Now owned by the Smart family, Duke Sandwich has three company-owned locations in the Greenville, S.C. area, each offering catering services.
