D’angelo Serves Up New Soups To Satisfy Customers’ Hunger For Great Food, Fast And At A Great Value

Nine Selections Introduced to Position Category as a Signature Offering for the Chain

DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS (Wednesday, January 28, 2004) - D’Angelo Sandwich Shops today announced the introduction of a new line of “Hot and Hearty” soups at its 200-plus company-owned and franchised restaurants throughout New England. The move places unprecedented emphasis on soup for the quick-service chain, and represents an effort to establish its restaurants as preferred destinations for yet another category in addition to the sandwiches and salads for which customers already crowd their doors.

The D’Angelo menu now offers nine new soup varieties, including:

“Maine Lobster Bisque” – minced sweet lobster meat simmered in rich cream and sherry
“Shrimp & Roasted Corn Bisque” – tender shrimp and roasted sweet corn combined with red peppers, light cream and potato
“Classic #9 Steak & Cheese” – based on D’Angelo’s famous original #9 sandwich, a hearty soup loaded with shaved steak, peppers, onions, mushrooms, and cheese
“Thanksgiving Every Day” – the flavor of Thanksgiving in a bowl, including a memorable combination of turkey, wild rice blend, cranberries, cream and sherry
“New England Clam Chowder” – authentic New England Clam Chowder made with sweet cream, hand-shucked clams, all-natural clam broth and tender potatoes
“Extreme Broccoli & Cheddar Cheese” – gently simmered chunks of broccoli and sharp cheddar cheese in a hearty, creamy combination
and the following low-fat offerings:

“Rosie’s Chicken Noodle” – chicken soup prepared the old fashioned way, with large, tender chunks of white chicken meat and an abundance of vegetables and pasta all cooked in a comforting chicken broth
“Santa Fe Chipotle Vegetable”– a spicy vegetarian option featuring a tomato base loaded with black beans, corn fresh garlic, cumin, cilantro, scallions, onions and, for an authentic Santa Fe flavor, the sting of Tabasco sauce, fresh jalapeno peppers and lime juice
“Hearty Garden Veggie” – another vegetarian selection, with only half a gram of fat and 40 calories per serving and featuring a ripe tomato broth full of fresh tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, squash, zucchini, carrots, green beans, cauliflower, green and red bell peppers and broccoli.
Most locations are offering these selections for $2.69 and $3.79 for cups and bowls, respectively.

Encouraging Customers to Warm Up to Soup

In a 10-unit test last October of the new soup varieties and a new soup warmer/merchandiser, D’Angelo doubled the volume of soup sold per restaurant. These favorable early reactions led the chain to proceed quickly to full rollout.

D’Angelo is now promoting the new “Hot & Hearty” soups via in-store posters, register cards, bag stuffers, updated takeout menus and the warmer/merchandiser. Restaurants also offered a month-long soup-sampling program in December to encourage trial.

In addition, the chain also unveiled an ongoing “Choose Two” program, in which guests can combine any two items – soup, salad or sandwich – and a fountain beverage for $5.99, as well as a frequency program in which guests who have made five soup purchases receive their sixth cup free.

"Soup is very popular among our guests, especially during the cold winter months,” says Lew Shaye, D’Angelo’s Senior Vice President of Brand and Product Development, “so we want to encourage them to warm up to the idea of coming to us for great taste and variety.

"Our objective is to develop another signature D’Angelo offering, so we’ve added greater selection and enhanced both the product quality and merchandising appeal of our soups. With these improvements and the fact that soup goes so well with both salads and sandwiches, we expect our customers to respond very favorably.”
