Cousins Subs Hits The Beach With Their First National Agreement To Open 50 Restaurants In Puerto Rico

MENOMONEE FALLS (Tuesday, August 17, 1999) - Cousins Subs Systems, Inc., the leading contender in the "sub war," is crossing the southern border and expanding into Puerto Rico. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin area's legendary submarine sandwich chain, grossing $59.9 million system-wide in revenues in 1998 and projecting nearly $65 million for 1999, recently announced their development agreement to open 50-stores for the Island of Puerto Rico.

"Bringing Cousins into the Puerto Rico market, allows us to embrace a terrific opportunity to further advance this award-winning sub chain outside the continental United States," said Carlos Garcia the Puerto Rican franchisee that makes up one-half of his San Juan-based company, along with partner Fernando Marquez.

Plans call for the opening of the first store by December 1999 with 5 or more targeted for San Juan. The duo will also open locations in Guaynabo, Vaymon, Dorado, Cuguas and Hato Rey, the downtown financial district of San Juan in the next two years.

According to Dave Kilby, executive vice president of Cousins Subs Systems, Inc., "This Puerto Rico growth plan is only the beginning. Cousins has already established itself as an exceptionally strong American franchise and we intend to develop the brand strategically as we enter the 21st century." What started out as one shop in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1972, Cousins Subs has expanded into a 141 store legacy and currently, 234 shops are under development.
