Cap Toss Contest Winner In Madison Takes Home The Scholorship And Heads To Mit

MADISON, WI (Wednesday, June 15, 2005) - Andrew Ji of Madison knew that he was heading off to Cambridge, Mass., to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the fall. But he had no idea that he would walk away with the $2,500 scholarship prize when he registered for the Cousins Subs Cap Toss Contest in Madison.

Ji and more than 40 other contestants, which included students and parents, lined up at the Alliant Energy Center on May 14 to compete to win money for college and other prizes. The contest was developed to give students the opportunity to experience the time-honored tradition of throwing their caps in the air, in a new and innovative way, because many schools have banned cap tossing at graduations.

"We were very excited that we were giving students the opportunity to win scholarship money and throw graduation caps around," said Larry Weissman, Cousins Subs vice president of marketing. "But we were blown away when we found out that the winner of the competition was going to attend MIT."

The Cousins Subs Cap Toss Contest winner in Madison plans to use his prize to help alleviate the cost of attending MIT. The prestigious institute of higher education is devoted to the advancement of knowledge and education of students in areas that contribute to or prosper in an environment of science and technology.

"Winning this competition was such a surprise," said Ji. "I never expected to win, but I'm so glad that I did. This scholarship is going to come in very handy."

In addition to Ji utilizing his scholarship money at MIT, other deserving high school students around the country will also have access to funds that will make attending college a reality as a result of the Cousins Subs Cap Toss Contest. Cousins Subs also donated funds to the Santana Dotson Foundation. The Santana Dotson Foundation was established in 1995 to provide college scholarships for disadvantaged, yet deserving high school students to help them realize their dreams of a college education.

During the Cousins Subs Cap Toss contest, there were a series of three challenges. The first event was the Cap Toss For Distance. For every foot thrown, a point as earned. For more tactical players, there was the Cap Toss For Accuracy. At this station, participants had a chance to test their accuracy and strategy skills. Contestants were challenged to land their cap within three strategically placed rings for points. Then there was the Moving Sub Cap Toss. Competitors had a chance to throw three caps at a moving mascot.

"The Cap Toss Contest was a unique and innovative way for The Santana Dotson Foundation and Cousins Subs to honor young adults that reached their goal of graduating high school, while raising funds for better education for those in need," said Weissman.

About Cousins Subs

Cousins Subs is based in Milwaukee, Wis., and is a national sub sandwich chain with stores throughout the Midwest and on the West Coast. The tradition of Cousins Subs started in 1972, when two transplanted cousins from Atlantic City saw the need for an East-coast style sub shop in their new hometown. They patterned their subs after the hoagie, grinder, hero and sub sandwiches they enjoyed back East. From the start, the two used bread baked fresh every morning and insisted on using only the finest, freshest ingredients.
