Young Rembrandts Rapidly ‘draws’ Ambitious Entrepreneurs, ‘erases’ Starving Artist Stereotype With Lucrative Franchise Opportunity

ELGIN, IL (Friday, September 26, 2003) - Young Rembrandts, an innovative educational art program that has changed the lives of thousands of children in a few short years, recently announced plans to expand nationally with an aggressive growth strategy that would triple the number of its franchises within the next three years.

After selling its first franchise in 2001, Young Rembrandts today has grown to 20 franchisees. Of those, nearly one half were sold in the past six months alone. Based on current growth rates, company executives project to reach a total of 30 franchises by the end of 2003 and a total of 75 within the next three years.

“People are extremely passionate about our concept,” said Bette Fetter, founder of Young Rembrandts. “Entrepreneurs are attracted to the gratifying nature of the work and the ability to have a positive impact on children, all while running their own business in a segment with huge growth potential.”

In fact, according to a 2002 article in the Wall Street Journal, educational franchises have grown by 35 percent since 1989. The growing demand for child education and service businesses stems from an increasing number of families with two working parents, particularly those seeking to provide their children with well-rounded, positive extracurricular activities outside of the home.

Sky’s the limit with school, park districts

Schools and park districts are prime targets for Young Rembrandts, especially since budget cuts have forced public schools across the nation to remove art and music from their standard curriculum, said Fetter, who started Young Rembrandts in 1988 by sharing her love of art with neighborhood children around her own kitchen table. With more than 81,812 elementary schools and nearly as many park districts in the nation, the growth potential for Young Rembrandts is tremendous.

“Schools are always looking to expand their after-school programs,” Fetter said. “In addition, Young Rembrandts is an ideal fit for park districts because it saves them the expense of hiring art teachers and staff.”

With a combined passion for art and motherhood, Fetter turned her homespun art curriculum for children into a booming, unique franchise opportunity with virtually no direct competitors. Young Rembrandts is easy to teach and follow, designed to build confidence as children progress from a simple line on a page to a drawing of the Notre Dame Cathedral. Through art, Young Rembrandts teaches children how to experience the world, build confidence and self-esteem, solve problems and set and achieve goals; along with developing fine motors skills and attention to detail.

No more starving artists

Young Rembrandts franchisees initially invest a total of $36,500 to $49,500, which includes the franchise fee. In addition to extremely low overhead and unlimited growth potential, franchisees can virtually set their own schedules and work from home. The initial investment also includes a detailed training program that covers sales and prospecting procedures, daily business operations, personnel issues, accounting procedures, curriculum mastery and classroom techniques.

A teaching certificate or background in art is not required to purchase a Young Rembrandts franchise. In fact, the majority of franchisees have general diverse backgrounds, including a dental hygienist, two engineers and mostly general business skills, with management, sales and marketing experience. A common trait is the desire for a more flexible lifestyle that offers personal and professional fulfillment.

“The ideal Young Rembrandt franchise candidate is a detailed, self-starter with good people and organizational skills with a desire to positively impact children’s lives,” Fetter said.

Parents frequently tell Young Rembrandts franchisees that the confidence and learning skills their children gained from the art classes, transcend into every aspect of their lives. In fact, word of mouth among parents has become a significant source of referrals.

Young Rembrandts classes average $8 per week. Classes are held weekly for an entire semester during the school year for pre-school and elementary students, and once a week for four weeks in park districts. Class sizes are kept to less than 20 per class and are offered for children from ages 3 to 12-years-old. Themed drawing camps are also available.
