Great Harvest Teams Up With Frontier Soups

DILLON, MONT (Monday, May 02, 2005) - Great Harvest Bread Co. has teamed up with Frontier Soups to offer customers a one-stop opportunity for securing the perfect whole grain meal.

Pairing one to two slices of any Great Harvest whole grain bread with a bowl of one of Frontier Soups’ new whole grain products meets – or exceeds – higher standards for whole grains consumption recommended in new dietary guidelines and food pyramid released this year by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services.

Among the 23 general recommendations – plus 18 additional suggestions for older people, children and special groups, Americans are encouraged to triple their consumption of whole grains. Not part of the original food pyramid introduced 13 years ago, this guideline reinforces numerous studies that underscore the health and weight-maintenance advantages of whole grains. Numerous studies have shown that eating more whole grains helps control weight while reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

The new recommended daily consumption of whole grains is 48 grams. To help consumers know what they’re eating, both Great Harvest and Frontier Soups have adopted a new program launched by the Whole Grains Council in Boston that identifies good to excellent sources of whole grains. The council’s stamps reassure consumers that products bearing any one of three stamps are authentic whole-grain products.

The “Whole Grains Good Source” stamp means the product (one slice Great Harvest bread or one bowl of Frontier Soups) counts as half a serving – it has at least 8 grams of whole grains. Either the “Whole Grain Excellent Source” or “100% Whole Grain Excellent Source” means either product counts as a full serving – it has at least 16 grams of whole grains.

Many Great Harvest slices from loaves with either “Whole Grain Excellent Source” or “100% Whole Grain Excellent Source,” including its popular “Honey Whole Wheat,” have well over 16 grams of whole grains. The new “Montana High Plains Wheat Berry Chili” features 31.63 grams of whole grains per serving, the “Iowa Open House Grain and Pasta Potage” has 17.05 whole-grain grams per serving, and the “Washington State Lentil Cracked Wheat Soup” offers 12.63 whole-grain grams per serving. A simple combination of this bread and soup meets the daily 48-gram recommended total of whole grains.

Great Harvest, which has 205 bakeries in 40 states, makes bread the old-fashioned way, completely from scratch. Coarsely stone-ground whole-wheat flour is milled fresh in Great Harvest stores every day. The bread includes only natural ingredients and no preservatives. Frontier Soups are also made of only natural ingredients and no artificial preservatives.
