Great Harvest Bread Co. Opens Second Location

Owner Adam Wong Leads Hawaiian Bakeries to Record Franchise Growth

HONOLULU, HI (Monday, May 09, 2005) - Three years ago, the future of young entrepreneur Adam Wong laid in limbo while the Great Harvest Bread Company headquarters weighed the idea: Would a bakery really work in Hawaii?

But Wong persisted. And that persistence paid off.

In less than one year, Wong has built his Honolulu bread store into one of the best-performing Great Harvest Bread Co. bakeries in the nation… and in the process, cleared away any doubts the franchisor might have had about baking bread in a tropical climate where rice foods have traditionally reigned.

In its first year of business, Wong’s Kahala bakery was ranked 11th in Great Harvest Bread Co. single-store sales. The average age of the preceding top ten stores is 15 years old.

“The success of the Great Harvest in Honolulu can be directly attributed to its owner. Adam has taken his bakery to a level few, if any, other bakeries in the history of Great Harvest have achieved in such a short amount of time,” says Mike Ferretti, President and CEO of the Dillon, Montana-based Great Harvest Franchising.

But that’s just the beginning. Wong is set to celebrate the Grand Opening of a second shop at 233 Merchant Street in Downtown. The scheduled opening date is Friday, May 20, 2005. Plans for a third and fourth Great Harvest Bread Co. bakery in Aiea and Kailua are already in the works, with a targeted opening date for this coming fall and next summer, respectively.

In the nearly thirty-year history of the franchise, there have only been seven franchisees to open three or more bakeries. None of those seven have done it in less than two years, as Wong is on track to do.

Wong’s Great Harvest Bread Co. bakeries specialize in fresh breads and sweets made from scratch, by hand, and through an artisan process that takes five hours—start to finish—per batch. Many of its baked goods are made from fresh flour that’s stone-ground in the bakery from whole wheat kernels shipped specially from Montana’s “Wheat Triangle.”

Hawaii’s second Great Harvest Bread Co. will celebrate its Grand Opening on Friday, May 20. The new bakery will open at 6:00 a.m. with scratch-baked sweets and a full coffee bar, featuring Peet’s Coffee & Tea. Hot loaves of handcrafted breads will start coming from the oven at 9:00 a.m. Grilled panini and signature sandwiches will be available during lunch hours.
