Wetzel’s Pretzels Expands to Philippines and Mexico

PASADENA, CA (Thursday, July 17, 2003) - Wetzel’s Pretzels, the pretzel bakery chain renowned for its super-premium hand-rolled soft pretzels, continues rolling into international territories. The company recently signed a master franchise agreement with Pretzel Specialists, Ltd., which plans to develop 120 Wetzel's Pretzels stores in the Philippines and Southeast Asia over the next ten years. In a separate transaction, Wetzel's Pretzels recently signed a master franchise agreement for Mexico, with the first store already open in Mundo e Mall, Mexico City. Rick Wetzel said "We are excited to expand into the Philippines and Mexico and see it as a logical extension of our international presence, which includes Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic." Plans are to have six stores open in the Philippines and four stores open in Mexico by the end of the year.

“Having successfully rolled across the U.S., we’ve taken pretzels worldwide as they are convenient great-tasting hand-held snacks with cross-cultural appeal,” stated Wetzel. “These two international agreements are significant milestones for us, as aggressive expansion efforts will help position Wetzel’s Pretzels as the industry leader in the pretzel segment.” The company has a stated goal of opening 1,000 locations before the end of the decade.
