Nemechek Finishes Seventh in Rain Delayed Zippo 200

WATKINS GLEN, NY (Saturday, August 13, 2005) - Joe Nemechek and his Cellular One/Sport Clips racing team finished seventh in today’s Zippo 200, which started two hours late due to rain. With the first 16 laps being run under caution and a carburetor problem discovered during qualifying, Nemechek did his team proud, posting his fifth top-ten effort of the season.

“We had an awesome car today, but we made a call on the carburetor right before qualifying that almost bit us,” explained Nemechek. “But, we came in and fixed the problem and everything happened the way it needed to for us to get back up to the front. I just wish we had the whole race to show what we had. Losing all those laps in the beginning trying to dry the track really cut into the race. But, I had a great time out there and I’m happy we’re back at Watkins Glen with the Busch cars. I can’t wait to bring the Cellular One/Sport Clips Chevy back here again next year.”

Rain was the name of the game at Watkins Glen throughout the weekend. With skies threatening during qualifying, Nemechek posted the 10th quickest time despite a carburetor problem that limited his gas flow on uphill climbs. With this in mind, the team was prepared to pit early to resolve the issue once the race got underway.

In addition to Nemechek’s Cellular One/Sport Clips Chevy, NEMCO Motorsports also fielded a car for road racer Chris Cook, which led to Nemechek being supported by his entire US Army team, including crew chief Ryan Pemberton during the 82-lap event.

Unsure of how significant the carburetor issue might become, Nemechek and Pemberton made the call to ride it out for a while to determine their strategy. In the early stages of the race, Nemechek could hold his own with the leaders, but was unable to mount a real challenge so Pemberton made the call to bring the Cellular One/Sport Clips Chevy to pit road for the adjustment during a lap 29 caution.

With the majority of cars staying on the racetrack, Nemechek would return to competition in the 37th position. Back under green, Nemechek reported that the car was under full power and he felt he could make his way back to the front if cautions fell his way.

The cautions did come as needed and by the time Nemechek made his final stop at lap 42 for a splash and go, he was posted in the 20th position. Knowing the importance of track position, Nemechek chose to ride out the remaining 40 laps without pitting. He reached the top 10 by lap 48 and took over the eighth spot at lap 57. With the final caution falling at lap 75, Nemechek picked up another position on the restart finishing seventh in the final road course race of the season. Ryan Newman won the event.

The next race for the Cellular One/Sport Clips team is this weekend’s Domino’s Pizza 250 at Michigan International Speedway. Television coverage begins Saturday at 3:00 PM eastern time on TNT. MRN will carry the live radio broadcast.
