Cleaning Up the Low-Carb Lifestyle

(Tuesday, May 17, 2005) - If you are one of the more than 10 million people following a low-carb diet, according to the NPD Group, a Chicago-based market research firm, your kitchen may be paying the price. The scorched pans and grease splatters could be leaving your home with unwelcome grease and grime. The Maids Home Services offers these tips for easy, effective cleanup:

• To clean scorched pots and pans, sprinkle a heavy coat of baking soda on the cooked on food, add hot water and dish detergent. Let it soak for 15 minutes and wash as usual.

• Greasy stove got you down? Wash exterior surfaces after they have cooled with detergent and warm to hot water. A water and baking soda paste can be used on difficult spots. Rinse and wipe dry.

• Don’t forget about the floor. The snap and crackle of an egg frying can splatter grease in all directions. Regularly scrub floors with a solution of warm water and dishwashing detergent or white vinegar, thoroughly clean and rinse. Surrounding cupboards should be washed regularly too with the same solution.

• The hood range can hold and trap grease and odors. Wash range hood and fan with warm water and vinegar then rinse well. Occasionally take the metal filter out, soak in warm water, vinegar and a few drops of liquid dish detergent, rinse well.

• A toothbrush works great to clean cheese out of a grater before washing it.

• Fried food can leave an unwelcome odor. Don’t just mask the odors with artificial scents. Try to air out your home daily, then neutralize the odor by simmering a small pan of vinegar on top of the stove or leave small saucers of white vinegar or baking soda around the house.
