Lawn Doctor Participates in PLCAA's Day on the Hill

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Friday, August 02, 2002) - Lawn and landscape professionals from across the country gathered in the nation's capital to take part in the Professional Lawn Care Association of America's (PLCAA) 13th annual Legislative Day on the Hill and 6th annual "Renewal & Remembrance" Cemetery Project on July 22-23, 2002.

This event is held annually to aid in the restoration of Arlington National Cemetery. This event has grown to include the restoration of the Congressional Cemetery. PLCAA and its affiliates, have been key players in the restoration process of the oldest cemetery in Washington.

This two-day event began early in the morning on July 22, 2002, with a dedication of work ceremony featuring guest speaker, EPA Assistant Administrator Steve Johnson, Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances. In honor of victims of Sept. 11 buried at Arlington, PLCAA member Vincent Tummino, battalion firefighter, New York City Fire Department, Battalion #22, Staten Island, formerly of Lawn Doctor of Sayreville-Edison, N.J., and Charles Campbell, fire chief, Fort Myer, Va., made special presentations. Both men were involved in fire-fighting and recovery efforts after 9/11. Tummino at the World Trade Center and Campbell at the Pentagon. Volunteer crew work included the area at Arlington National Cemetery where some of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 are buried.

Several of Lawn Doctor, Inc.'s employees, along with several franchisees, participated in this commemorative event. Lawn Doctor used patented Turf Tamer® Application Equipment to service Congressional Cemetery, which occupies 32.5 acres of land. Lawn Doctor volunteered their time to revitalize the turf at Congressional Cemetery through the application of the necessary weed controls.

Congressional Cemetery is a place to trace the growth of the nation’s Federal institutions and the lives and actions of individuals. Since 1807 there have been an estimated 60,000 interments. Among the 60,000 graves are privates and generals of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, Mexican War and Union and Confederate soldiers, craftsmen and architects of the Capitol, Indian chiefs and foreign diplomats, victims of tragedies and crime, prominent businessmen and ordinary citizens. The Congressional Cemetery is a historic landmark and the final resting-place of Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Quincy Adams and Zachary Taylor and First Ladies Dolley Madison and Louisa Adams.

Restoring the condition of such a historic place, Lawn Doctor is ensuring Congressional Cemetery’s role in the future or our country.
