Dealing with Disaster

SERVPRO® effectively responds to fire, smoke and water disaster projects of any size. In 1991, SERVPRO® assisted the Pentagon when two million gallons of water flooded a 565,000 square-foot area. SERVPRO extracted the water and had the area dried and dehumidified in seven days. On a smaller scale, SERVPRO® is equally adept at handling flooded residential or commercial structure.

In order to respond to emergencies, SERVPRO® offers 24-hours a day, 7 days a week service to its clients. One phone call to SERVPRO’s emergency call center ensures a prompt response to any location in the U.S. Once the center has been notified, a SERVPRO® representative is on-site within four hours to begin mitigation services.

Projects can often be handled by individual franchises or small groups of franchises working in tandem. In the case of especially large and severe disasters, SERVPRO’s Catastrophic Loss Division Management Team (CAT) will bring together the responses of a number of franchises from throughout the region or the country, if necessary. In the case of the Pentagon, twelve franchises from Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio convened to handle the specialized, urgent requirements demanded by the project.

Restore vs. Replace

SERVPRO’s goal is to restore as much property as possible to its previous condition in order to minimize the need for replacement. All SERVPRO franchisees are capable of cleaning and restoring a fire, smoke or water-damaged building and its contents, including: wall, ceiling and floor surfaces; furniture; fabric; and fixtures. Many franchisees also offer cleaning and restoration of special items, such as: HVAC duct systems; building exteriors; electronic equipment, including computers; and documents which have sustained water damage.

Specialized Training & Products

SERVPRO’s restoration expertise is based on highly specialized techniques and products. All SERVPRO® franchisees participate in a comprehensive New Franchise Training program. Part of this program is held at the National Training Center in Tennessee. The state-of-the-art Center features a four-bedroom house that is repeatedly subjected to fire damage and other rooms that are flooded for training purposes. Students learn through hands-on experience. Skills that are mastered include the most effective technique to be used in cleaning and restoring carpeting, walls, fixture, furniture and other elements of a typical building. In addition, SERVPRO has a nationwide network of trainers and directors, seasoned franchisees who provide training and day-to-day operational support to franchisees. SERVPRO also offers numerous continuing education programs at state, regional and national workshops and seminars conducted throughout the year.

All SERVPRO franchises have access to specialized products and equipment developed and distributed by the company. The SERVPRO national office engages its own chemist and fully staffed chemical plant, for the research, development and manufacturing of SERVPRO products.
