ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARENTS DRIVE DEMAND FOR TUTORING PROGRAMS

Kumon Math & Reading Centers Ranked No.1 in Tutoring Field for Fourth Consecutive Year

TEANECK, NJ (Wednesday, January 19, 2005) - Driven by parent demand, the tutoring industry is expected to grow by 15 percent in 2005 according to the Education Industry Association. Higher expectations, low test scores and mounting competition for admission to top-tier universities is boosting student enrollment at tutoring centers across the country. At Kumon Math and Reading Centers, enrollment has increased by 55 percent over the past four years and as a result, the company expects to open 150 new centers in 2005 to meet the demand.

"Supplemental education programs are gaining momentum across the country, especially among elementary school children," said Mark Mele, vice president of franchising with Kumon. "In fact, more than 60 percent of students enrolled in Kumon Math & Reading Centers are in the second through sixth grades, with fourth graders comprising the highest enrollment."

Entrepreneur magazine recently ranked Kumon No. 1 in the tutoring category for the fourth consecutive year. Kumon has 1,677 centers and 181,706 students enrolled in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The company opened its first North American office in 1983 with 16 centers and 1,051 students.
