Long John Silver's® invites customers to celebrate 'Talk Like a Pirate Day' on Sept. 19th
Wannabe Buccaneers Can Order Like a Pirate and Enjoy 99-cent Big Fish Sandwiches
LOUISVILLE, KY (Thursday, September 16, 2004) -
Long John Silver's® is again celebrating Talk Like A Pirate Day on Sept. 19. For the second consecutive year, the restaurant chain named after the pirate in Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island is inviting customers to get in on the buccaneer fun.
Customers who visit Long John Silver's® on Sunday, Sept. 19, will be invited to "order like a pirate" and enjoy a 99-cent Big Fish Sandwich. Pirate hats will be available for youngsters and adults alike, and every Kids Meal will include a pirate-themed prize, such as an eye patch, treasure map, earring, bracelet or parrot, while supplies last.
"Long John Silver's® customers really embraced Talk Like a Pirate Day last year, and we couldn't wait to set sail for more pirate fun in 2004. There's a little pirate in everyone who works for our company, so this is a day our crews really enjoy," said Mike Baker, Long John Silver's® Chief Marketing Officer. "And our 99-cent Big Fish Sandwich will fill up even the hungriest pirate who boards one of our 'ships' on Sept. 19."
Talk Like a Pirate Day began in 1995 when creators Mark Summers and John Baur were playing racquetball in Albany, Ore. When one player reached for a tough shot, he exclaimed, "Aaaaarrrr!" Spontaneously, the two began speaking in pirate jargon, complete with accents, and the idea was born. The day is now an annual tradition and the light-hearted pirate fun has caught on with the media. This marks the second year that Long John Silver's has helped Summers and Baur celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day.
"The crew for International Talk Like a Pirate Day is growing by leaps and bounds," said Summers, whose pirate name is Cap'n Slappy. "We're up to 19 million participants and counting. We'd like to invite aspiring pirates from all over the world to come be a part of the fun!"
Fans of piracy can also visit the Long John Silver's web site at www.ljsilvers.com and use the pirate name generator to determine their own just-for-fun pirate names. The site also includes a pirate dictionary and trivia.
Talking Like a Pirate is as much about attitude as it is vocabulary, the founders point out. A pirate-like sneer and a sprinkling of "Ahoy," "matey," "aye aye" and "me hearty" is enough to make the most dedicated land lubber appear to be a convincing buccaneer.
